I'd agree with all of that except the last bit (that the mainstream Democrats are just having fun as they tar and feather progressives). I don't think they're doing it just for the kicks, but because they believe (reasonably, based on many years' worth of evidence) that it will pay them dividends now and in the future. The only time they need to muffle their contempt for the liberals in the party is when an election is drawing near; outside of those few months they can be in constant campaign mode, letting their corporate backers and "centrist" supporters know that there's nothing to fear.
