If you've been reading here for a while you know I do a lot of thanking lawyers, and which lawyers I thank the most. Well, the Center for Constitutional Rights is dragging Chevron into court today, for this:
On May 28, 1999, Chevron, through its Nigerian subsidiary, participated in the murder, shooting, and subsequent torture of Nigerian villagers who were engaging in environmental protest against the oil giant. Chevron paid the Nigerian police and soldiers who conducted the attacks, ferried them to the attack zone and closely supervised them during the attack. CCR's case Bowoto v. Chevron - filed along with EarthRights International - seeks justice for the villagers who were injured and killed at Chevron's behest.
This is the same CCR that spends its time turning scumbags like George Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and John Ashcroft into defendants--a description I much prefer (I'd like "prisoners" even better, but I'll settle for the former for now). And you can help them do it, here.
UPDATE: Amy Goodman has much more about the background to this trial on today's show, here (or see the video here).
