The best news I've heard in a while:
Ralph Nader says he is seriously considering running for president in 2008 because he foresees another Tweedledum-Tweedledee election that offers little real choice to voters.
But he's still such a shrinking violet--never willing to say what's really on his mind:
“Democrats always know how to implode, how to be ambiguous, how to waver, how not to be authentic.”
While Nader praised two candidates who have almost no chance of winning their party’s nomination — Republican Ron Paul and Democrat Mike Gravel — he was severe in his criticism of Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
“She is a political coward,” Nader said. “She goes around pandering to powerful interest groups on the one hand and flattering general audiences on the other. She doesn’t even have the minimal political fortitude of her husband.”
One interesting thing: the link is from CommonDreams. I've always thought of them as mildly progressive, with disturbing tendencies to favor Democrats and a Democratic point of view--particularly at election times. But they recently added a comment feature to the site, and I've been surprised to find just how far to the left of them their readership is. I expected that the comments would reflect the limp Nation-style liberalism of the site itself, but not at all. Case in point: out of 70 responses so far to the Nader article, the overwhelming majority of them are not only excited about Nader running but are completely dismissive of the Democrats.
I wonder if the editors at CommonDreams are noticing this as well, and--more importantly--if they'll go the extra step and respond accordingly by including more articles that are supportive of Nader (or critical of the Democrats) during the upcoming election cycle. We'll see.
Wonderful - I'm glad I live in Cali becuse he'll make the actual ballot. The only question is will the greens be smart enough to support him this time?
